Arctic Cultural Forum

In 2014, the Anchorage Museum participated in the Arctic Cultural Forum in Salekhard, Yamal in the Siberian region of Russia. The Forum explored the role of culture as a strategic resource in the development of contemporary society. The program featured a variety of events, including discussions, seminars on branding the territories of Russia, public lectures, workshops, a theater festival of Russian classic works, and Indigenous performing groups.

The list of invited participants included representatives of the Russian Ministry of Culture, leaders of federal organizations, and leading experts from Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other regions of Russia as well as from Finland. The Anchorage Museum was the only US participant in the Forum. Director Julie Decker presented on the Museum’s Northern Initiative and the connection of Arctic peoples across the Circumpolar North.

The Forum created new international cultural connections with Northern regions. The Anchorage Museum has since collaborated with the Shemanovskiy Museum and Exhibition Center in Salekhard, including supporting painter Bill Brody in traveling the Yamal to participate in a painting artist residency.

Salekhard is one of the northernmost cities in Russia.
